Studying Nutrition

After working as a biomedical scientist, I took the leap to start an MSc in Personalised Nutrition.

Throughout my masters, my life changed so much. From one lecture to the next, I began making changes across many aspects of my life - from my kitchen, to the food I ate, the skincare I used, and much more.

Understanding HOW everything we consume influences our health was very powerful in reshaping the way I saw food and health.

My Story

My own health story started from a very young age. From weaning off breastfeeding, I became an unhappy baby - moody, my skin was red and puffy across my face and I become asthmatic. After no luck at the doctors for many years, my mum, as a last resort, experimented by changing my diet to dairy free. And this was the magic answer.

However, as I got older, I struggled with tonsilitis, blocked ears, congestion, and Raynaud's. In my midteens, I started struggling with IBS-like symptoms which caused me to avoid certain foods or food altogether to avoid triggering onset of my symptoms.

This felt like a long list of health complaints and I was fed up of prescriptions.

At this time in my life, I was studying chemistry, biology and psychology, and choosing my undergraduate degree. I wanted to learn more about health, disease and biochemsitry - so I chose biomedicine. And I loved it! I loved learning how the body works on a large and small scale, but the picture still felt incomplete.

I was learning about each part of the body in turn, but never as one complex, interwoven system. Then my lightbulb moment arrived - I started a summer internship with a Nutritional Therapist & Functional Medicine Practitioner. I had found a kind of medicine that focused on understanding biochemistry using a systems approach, that looked to the root cause of disease and used nutrition to support health. I was fixed.

I finished my undergraduate degree, squeezing in extra nutrition webinars whenever I could.

Later, working as a biomedicial scientist, I worked in a histocompatibility and immunogenetics lab, then moved into molecular sciences - first diagnostics, then research, but the idea of studying Nutritional Science kept beckoning...
